Saving at-risk companion animals. We are a foster-based rescue group that provides a safe and loving space for homeless companion animals that are waiting to be adopted. We primarily focus on helping local shelter animals that are at risk of being euthanized because they are sick or injured, are considered too old or too young to be adoptable, are shy or traumatized animals that need some extra time to gain confidence, or need a place to go because the shelters are full.We primarily rescue animals from Monterey county, but also assist animals from Santa Cruz and San Benito counties when possible.
The AFRP Treasure Shop is located at 158 Fountain Ave in Pacific Grove. This upscale benefit shop offers an eclectic assortment of donated furnishings, jewelry, furniture, elegant clothing, art, collectibles, books and more. All proceeds support AFRP's rescue and adoption programs. Discover a treasure, donate your gently used items (during store hours) or volunteer for a few hours a week!
Submit your dog or cat for a Courtesy Listing on the AFRP website. Animals must be spayed/neutered prior to posting. A good digital photo and a paragraph describing your pet can be sent to info@animalfriendsrescue.org. Be sure to include your animal's name, age, breed and weight. Is your dog or cat good with other animals or children?

I am trying to reach out to anyone who used to work or volunteer for animal friends rescue project in Pacific Grove California and who quit or left because of Darla Barnes Smith. I can be reached at 8:05-368-5180

I adopted my dog from AFRP in October 2020. The process was very smooth and I did not experience a lot of communication issues that others have stated. Before I reached out to AFRP, I had contacted several other rescues / shelters about dogs that they had for adoption and I never heard back from most of those. While AFRP's process (application, pre-screen, meet & greet, and home visit) seems lengthy and maybe a bit arduous, I feel it is necessary to make sure the animal is going to a good home and will be well cared for.

They worst thing for the animal is to have it returned. I have never worked for or volunteered for AFRP. I have volunteered at two other shelters in the Bay Area and have seen a lot of animals returned because it wasn't the right fit. I felt AFRP spent the time to get to know me and my situation so that wouldn't happen. They also checked in with several me in the weeks after the adoption to make sure things were going well.

Love the passion behind what they do--but a bit overly particular and unresponsive. I want to preface this by saying I attempted multiple times to adopt a dog from AFRP a year and a half ago. Multiple Calls. Emails. Applications. The works. I had not received any word back once regarding any of the dogs I applied to meet. Thankfully, I did find my soul dog at a shelter out in Fresno and am grateful to have had our fates connect.

She is a blessing and I'm grateful that things turned out how they did. However, recently after much thought and consideration, my partner and I decided we were in a good place in all the ways to welcome a second dog into our home. I once again applied to meet a dog up for adoption with AFRP weeks ago, as we are both locals, and just as before, radio silence.

Like I mentioned, I commend this establishment's passion to adopt their dogs to the perfect home. But I do believe the people here are a bit too choosy. And the lack of response is most upsetting. I've discussed with other locals and their experience with AFRP and many have had similar experiences as well. It's unfortunate because I know that I as well as many others are very much fit to adopt to.

And it saddens me that we have been disregarded like before. Their site says they love to play matchmaker, but I'm not sure how that is accomplished with not a word back to the inquiring families. Please take this criticism constructively, AFRP. No hate from us, just disappointment.

I adopted a kitten recently and it was overall a great experience. Initially the first 2 kittens I applied for were not available (other people applied first) but I'm glad I ended up with our kitten, she is a great. In the reviews some people mentioned having problems, but I didn't at all (and I have never worked/volunteered for the organization).

I would recommend bringing cash or check to pay for the adoption fee because there is a decent surcharge for card. The adoption coordinator Sarah was great and responsive and a big thanks to whoever my kittens foster parents were, she is fun, brave, and has a big personality.

Another terrific agency offering adoption of wonderful pets. Some of which maybe older. The people who run this agency are very helpful and friendly. This agency is definitely a blessing and worth checking out if someone is interested in finding a good pet.

I simply can't believe that the foster mom's give false promises of adoption after meeting me and then email to say that they are going to pass. She said she was going to go with the other family that had applied to adopt the puppy. However Weeks later the dog is still available for adoption according to their website. From what I've read all the one star reviews mirror my personal experience and a lot of the five-star reviews are just people who work there period or are from a long time ago when the staff used to be decent and actually call you back.

Saw an adoptable dog on their website that seemed to be a perfect fit for our family. Immediately put in the online application and called the next day to set up an appointment. Firstly, there is no contact number that puts you through to a live person, only a voice-mail. Secondly, I called twice, several days apart, and have yet to receive a call back.

I understand that there may be multiple applications per dog, but they should still respond to potential adopters. Fortunately, we were able to visit and adopt a wonderful dog from the Monterey SPCA. I don't recommend this place because they seem unable or unwilling to properly communicate.

This place is shady! Tried to adopt a cat and put in a application and never heard anything back. So I went to petco to see the kittens where they had them and seen the kittens we wanted to adopt and found the phone number. So I called and a lady told me she would review my application and call me back so we could adopt. Never got a call back so I called the number back and now it goes straight to voice mail.

Complete waste of time and very shady. It seems like they don't even exist and it's a shame for the cats they don't follow up with applications. They should be shut down from what I have read about them and what I have experienced

I love the mission of this organization. I adopted my little fur baby here several years back and he's been the best buddy a girl can have. This organization also works with local shelters to offer young and old fur critters the chance to live out their lives with people who care.

I wanted to adopt a puppy and they flat out said my condo was not safe for a pet and denied me to adopt. Thankfully we didn't give up and we got a puppy Maltipoo we are so in love with. I will not recommend this place to adopt a puppy from.
