This August, after more than 15 years in a converted daycare center on Mars Hill Road, we will open Athens newest community pet destination. The Mars Hill location has been the heart of our organization since 2007 but we're in need of an upgrade. We rescue and protect companion animals by providing for their wellbeing, uniting them with loving homes, and advocating for a compassionate society.

We're looking to build a team of individuals with a passion for rescue. At AAHS we want to help young professionals by cultivating a set of skills that they can carry with them through the rest of their professional career.
Services
We're passionate about ensuring that all pets have access to quality care. A big part of that means making sure people have access to quality pet care they can afford. Explore our low cost services below to learn more about how AAHS can help you and your pets.
Nearly five million pets are euthanized in shelters each year. At AAHS, we rescue these animals from area shelters and place them in loving, happy homes. When you open your home and your heart to adopt a rescue pet, you're changing that animal's life forever. You're giving them another chance at love, comfort, and happiness.
There's no question: adopting a pet is a big decision. And at the end of the day, the best home for a pet is a loving one. But while treats and cuddles are immensely important for a pet's well-being, they can't replace the necessities of life. Can you care for your pet's food, exercise, and veterinary needs?
Pets brighten our lives. Take one look at AAHS's adoptable pets below and we're certain you'll find a cutie who catches your eye! Once you do, simply fill out our adoption application and we'll let you know when you can stop by our adoption center to meet your new rescue buddy.

A few weeks ago I adopted a cat from Athens Area Humane Society. The process was smooth, and Ms. Cindy was wonderful. However, she was full of fleas and tapeworms when I brought her home. I'd recommend getting a flea collar or giving Capstar 24 hours before bringing your new pet home. Also request another round of dewormer. She was not the only cat there with tapeworms. Other than that, and going to the vet for the second time in 3 weeks, she is a great addition to the home. Just. really check for fleas and worms!

Such a great place to play with cats and dogs. Getting to know your future companion here is the biggest plus to adopting. I really like how each animal is taken care of properly which can be shown in their behavior as they are so relaxed and calm.

Thank you so much. She is doing so good and we appreciate you so much. She is almost back to her old self as she continues her duties as my ESA while I am working and she is still enjoying her Paw Patrol. So thank you again for fixing her and giving her a microchip so I know she is always safe.

Excellent facility, caring helpful staff. They helped us find just the right cat as a companion to our present cat. Reasonable adoption charge that covered everything.

They are far better than any veterinarian. I've been to in Georgia.

I made an appointment to neuter my dog on Jan.31 2022. They told me my dog was too anxious for the surgery that's day so we rescheduled and left with some medication. Throughout this whole process I was very understanding. However I came in for my rescheduled appointment on feb.2 2022 and just as the first day my dog barked at the doctor (it's only his 2nd interaction with him and I told him he was not immediately trusting) he did not even attempt to make him less anxious.

Which by the way you can't do so in 2 minutes. And about 5 minutes of arriving there for my appointment I was sent home with him. All he said was he's was not comfortable preforming surgery. For this being a humane society they were not patient at all not even after I said he was a rescue. I feel like the doctor should have done more to make him comfortable but he gave up too easy.

Terrible experience. I took my dog for a simple neuter and they totally botched it, resulting in a bad infection and 2 reconstructive surgeries. The vet from another clinic said they made unnecessary incisions and gave the wrong medication. If I hadn't rushed my dog to the hospital, he could have died. DO NOT GO HERE IF YOU LOVE YOUR PET

Do NOT take your animals here. My friend took his pup here for pup here, and they made unnecessary incisions and put him on useless antibiotics that put the pup in a lot of pain. Other vets cannot understand why they did what they did! Now this pup is having to have reconstructive surgery from the damage ATHENS HUMANE SOCIETY did. Incredibly ridiculous. They need to be shut down.

I visited the new location to make some donations and ended up visiting with four of their kitties. I left without one, mostly because I couldn't decide between three of them (one was too shy for my three young kids and two big energetic dogs). I love the new location! It is so open, bright, and clean. The gentleman that helped us was very friendly and informative.

They were pretty awesome with little kids as well since they were able to help me calm my 15 month old when he tripped and fell. He tripped on his own feet, not anything at the shelter. I cannot wait for them to fully open back up to the public for their vet services because I'm planning on taking my dogs there and two stray cats there for vet services.

If you are looking to adopt, please look here first. They are a no kill shelter and non profit that collects animals from other shelters that are kill shelters to save as many lives as possible. If you can't adopt, donate or volunteer! They have a huge list of items that they are always accepting and they always need help.

Athens Humane is my number one recommendation. My first cat was adopted from here and as a first time cat owner, they were so sweet in helping me learn how to take care of her. They provided the shots and just put off an attitude of positivity. Almost 2 years later when he got sick, they sent me a condolence letter and honestly, it was something I never expected but I had appreciated so much.

They provide so much for the community, my favorite being the pictures with Santa. My cats are so much like my children it just excites me every year. My second cat, while not adopted from Athens Humane was neutered here and again, I had nothing but a positive experience. They answered all my questions, dealt with my nonstop calls, and were available to load my 12 pound new baby for me. Athens Humane is truly a light in the community regarding animals and I will constantly shout out their programs.
