GREAT, Inc. is a non-profit greyhound rescue and adoption organization located in central Florida. We find homes for greyhounds that can no longer compete in racing. GREAT has placed over a thousand greyhounds since 1993. Although we are not affiliated with the racing industry, we do receive our dogs from the trainers and owners who want to place their retired racers in private homes.
Origin of the Greyhound - Ancestors of sighthounds first appeared among Middle Eastern nomadic peoples. In a movable camp setting, it was common for dogs to follow the camp, eating from its trash. The presence of these dogs was tolerated because of the guard service they provided. But the dogs were regarded as wild and disagreeable, as evidenced by most references to dogs in the Bible, with the exception of Proverbs 30:29-31, which praises greyhounds by name.At some point, a special kind of dog that could hunt along with humans was discovered or bred.
GREAT places greyhounds in Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Polk & Hernando counties in Florida. We will consider applications in the counties surrounding our core area based on volunteer availability. If your county is not listed, please select other. We will contact you to let you know if we can assist in your county, or we will refer you to a local group.
This is not restricted to items purchased from Barnes & Noble, our hosts, who graciously allow us space in their store located in Carrollwood at 11802 North Dale Mabry Highway. Gift wrapping is free, but we welcome donations for the greyhounds!
