Services
From Day One, it was the dream of the HCSPCA organizers and volunteers to have their own shelter facility. This dream came true in 2003 when Ed and Trudy Brune offered to underwrite a new shelter facility to be named after Trudy, in recognition of her life-long love of animals. To give every pet in the Hill Country the best life possible through successful rescue, adoption, community relationships, awareness, and advocacy.
The Animal Care Specialist (ACS) supports the Hill Country SPCA's programs and services and provides direct care to the animals and ensures the health and enrichment of all animals at the HCSPCA. The ACS works with the public and provides customer service, assists with animal selection, coordinates adoptions, answers inquiries, and helps clean and sanitize kennels.
The adoption process at the Hill Country SPCA is a matchmaking process. We strive to match the best possible pet with the best possible home and family. Sometimes that means the animal you fall in love with online, may not be the perfect match to take home. A typical adoption goes something like this.
The Hill Country SPCA is different from your traditional shelter in many ways. One of those ways is that we take in bottle babies, pregnant animals, and nursing moms. We then care for them until they are old enough for adoption. Doing so has created a unique adoption process for these little ones. Our goal with every litters is that each puppy has a home lined up on their available date, and none have to spend a night in shelter alone without their siblings. We have also found that when placing purebred, or "highly desirable" dogs we receive an overwhelming amount of interest, and the first application isn't always the best match for that particular dog.

We went to adopt a puppy and made a meet and greet appointment. They told us we could not meet the puppy until it was 5 months old. Then we found out the puppy already got adopted. We were so excited to get this new puppy because my son lost his 14 year old dog last year. They just plain lied to us. They should have our application unless they just trashed it.

If you want to know why people go outside of shelters to adopt puppies, try and adopt a puppy from here. I provided shot records of my past pets, vet records, pictures of my fence you name it. I jumped through hoops. I have a fully fenced 2 acre property and I'm semi retired so I am with my animals for most of the day. They wanted more and more pictures.

My very old Shepherd with euthanized over seven years ago and they wanted all those records. My vet had retired but the vet office told them my deceased dog had been well taken care of. I adopted my other dog from Austin pets alive and they want a lot of information but they don't ask you to give the same information over and over and over again. The facility is clean but I don't believe they give the animals enough one on one time. The puppy I wanted would have had the best life because my pets are family. It's a shame for the dogs they house. A real disappointment.

They do a lot for the animals in their local community. Nice clean atmosphere. Had a wonderful shot clinic that they just held. Well organized

Having visited several shelters both private and city run I was impressed with the orderliness and cleanliness of this shelter. The two dogs we visited with did not even have kennel odor - which is a first. They were like well cared for pets owned by loving people rather than shelter animals. Before applying to foster a dog, I read the comments here and so was concerned about being kicked around by overly fussy paperwork.

I did find qualifying for fostering/adoption to be painstaking but I also had no issue with it. I take it on faith that anybody wishing to foster or adopt an animal is someone who cares about animal welfare. I didn't experience anything beyond what was necessary for an organization that doesn't know us to be reasonably sure that the animal trusted to us would be well-treated. I'm not surprised that the shelter balked at sending one or more of the animals in its care to a home it isn't sure of. I'd not have it any other way.

We recently adopted a wonderful puppy. When we were looking, the staff was very friendly, informative, & patient with us. They seemed very caring abt each & every animal in the shelter. Each stall was clean & animals had water. Very happy with the facility, staff, &.especially with our new puppy!

We adopted two puppies from here and the experience was very good. There was an issue after the fact with one of the dogs that the SPCA handled with great care. You can see how much these people love the animals they work with. I can very highly recommend.

The staff is incredibly helpful! I sent out an email to the local shelters stating the size and temperament of a dog we'd like to adopt. We specifically wanted one that would do well our special needs young daughter. I received a reply promptly hill country SPCA! They thought Sophie would be a good match. We met her then adopted her and brought her home! She is a patient, adorable dog that fits perfectly into our family.
