Over the last 1.5 years during the pandemic, the HSWA has continued to put the well-being of our adoptable animals above all else. Despite a significant lack of volunteers, we have managed to maintain a safe and clean environment for our dogs and cats. During this time, we have also continued to process adoptions by appointment only and, thus far, this model has worked well for us.

So, going forward, until further notice, all adoptions will continue to happen via appointment only. Our shelters are run entirely by volunteers, so we do our best to work around our "day job" schedules to find a time that matches your schedule.
Services
Animal control at that time was very rudimentary: the "housing" consisted of a double-tiered row of open cages with no protection from rain, heat, or cold. Dogs were handled with pitchforks and rumor said a bullet to the head ended their lives. There was no provision for cats or other animals. After a public meeting in the auditorium of Alabama Power Company, the new Tuscaloosa County Humane Society formed a board of directors, which promptly gained 501(c)3 status.Through the generosity of Dr. Sarah Rogers, we were soon able to build a shelter on 35th Street with a 100-animal capacity and a small pasture to the side.
We find loving adopters for homeless, neglected, and/or abused dogs and cats and other animals. We maintain lists of pets needing new homes and people seeking pets, and we assist others with vet care and finding homes for rescued animals. NOTE: If you see a case of suspected animal cruelty, call the police ASAP.
With the pandemic (hopefully) winding down, we are so excited to start fully participating in events again in 2022! With more events to come, we're looking forward to the spring and summer months keeping us busy! Make sure to follow us on social media, particularly Facebook, to stay up to date on all our happenings!
To start the adoption process, you will need to fill out an adoption application and be accepted as an adopter. You can fill out an application even before you decide which animal you want to adopt. In no way does it bind you to adopting from us, it just helps speed up the process for when you fall in love with your new furry friend!

Great shelter! They love and care about their animals. We are currently fostering adoptable dog Monkey and she is so sweet! She would be great in a young family since she's such a lovebug and so gentle. She does well with other dogs and would benefit from a fenced yard, but she'd be a good fit as an apartment dog as well being a medium sized pup. She can be very energetic or a couch potato - she really just matches your mood!

We believe that she is mixed with lab/hound due to her webbed toes and personality. She's also very easy to train! If you're interested in adopting Monkey, definitely look on the HSWA website!
