Services
In business since 1992, our goal has always been to create a welcoming "home away from home" for your dog. A safe place where your dog can feel secure, learn valuable skills and can have fun too. Owner Ruby Madrigal began this business based on her passion to help animals find safe and loving homes.
As a dog owners we all lead busy lives. Between work, family and friends, it is inevitable that our dogs will be left at home alone. Dogs are social beings and it is common for dogs that are left alone for long periods of time to develop problems such as separation anxiety, excessive barking and destructive behavior.
K9U Chicago is one of the oldest and largest dog care facilities in Chicago. We offer over 29,000 feet of indoor and outdoor play area. We work with aggressive dogs, AKA reactive dogs, and have separate parks and play areas based on the temperament of the pets we care for. Our staff is highly trained and has extensive experience managing pet daycare facilities and animal hospitals.
Our dog shuttle service provides Pick Up and Drop Off Service transportation for Dog Daycare and Dog Boarding. When driver tries to pick-up the dog and can't due to reasons that are not in K9U Chicago's control (e.g., door person does not have the key) or in case of cancellation when driver is already on the way to get the dog.

My dog went to K9 University for a 2 week board and train and I would caution anybody from investing in this for their dogs going forward. During the 2 weeks, the communication from the trainer was hit or miss. At one point, I even called the facility at one point to check that everything was okay because I had not received update videos as promised in multiple days.

Despite apologies and promises at that point, the consistency still continued to be hit or miss. On the morning that I was to pick my dog up, it was made clear it was important that I come when the trainer was there so that I could learn what he taught my dog. The trainer was not available at the time I had noted that I planned to come when booking, so I pushed back the time to accommodate (despite finding out an hour before that time).

When I did arrive, the trainer spent maybe 5 minutes with me and said "you watched the videos of the training right?" and that was essentially the end of the session. I don't like leaving negative reviews and I waited a bit before writing this in hopes I'd find the bright spot that I wasn't originally seeing. That said, after spending over $2,000 I've seen little to no difference in my dog's behavior.

It feels like all they did for 2 weeks was reinforce the things he already knew how to do. I'm so disappointed and I hope I can save somebody else from making the same mistake I did.

I absolutely love this place. My dog is huge and has behavioral issues. The team here has managed him very well and progresses him at a good pace for his disposition. I appreciate the Report Cards letting me know how he is doing and I appreciate the continued efforts to give him a bath. They are just so great and I'm happy to have them caring for my beast baby.

I've been bringing all of my dogs to K9U for 10 years. I cannot say enough about the compassion and care they show my dogs, as well as the service they provide to their clients. They have always been accommodating of changes/last minute requests and go above and beyond to help whenever I need it. I highly recommend Ruby and her team - I wouldn't trust my "babies" to anyone else!

I just started a leash reactivity class and so far so good. No frills, in a not great part of the city, but the desk staff and instructor were helpful, friendly and kind, and my pup & I learned a lot in our first hour. It's a class of two and an excellent instructor, so I'm very happy with my decision so far! (Also exhausted, and a little dizzy after working on the "heel" command for most of the hour!)

I've been taking my dogs to K9 for close to 10 years now. I can't imagine taking my dogs anywhere else. The staff couldn't be friendlier or more helpful. You can tell that everyone truly love dogs and aren' t just there to work. As soon as my dogs recognize the area they get really excited and basically pull me inside the doors. That alone really puts me at ease knowing they love being there so much. Couldn't recommend K9 enough!

My dog Charlie has been here several times and he's always so excited as soon as he sees the building. The staff greet him by name which I think is sweet. I've used their daycare, boarding and grooming services. Though I think communication could be better in regards to grooming I always love how Charlie looks when he's done. The facility always seems clean which I like to see. Best of all Charlie is happy and sleepy when he comes home after a long day of play. Not every facility fits everyone but K9 University works for us.

I sent my dog to daycare a few times before I knew I would have to board him. He came back a little shaky each time, mainly I chalked up to the barking in the ran and just being overwhelmed. I sent him to the 10 day board and train. When I went to pick him up, they told me he had 2 extra days since they lost power for 48 hours - but no one had alerted me during that time.

They claimed he was the "model dog" for the other dogs during their sessions, yet it seems they worked on no issues we had previously discussed. I later went back for a free private session that I was owed (6 months later because no one would get back to me) and my dog shuddered the whole time. I even watched another dog come in for boarding and immediately put in the back in the crate.

To this day, if we see the K9 van when on a walk, my dog will curl up with tail between his legs and essentially try to go invisible and get as far away as possible. Bad vibes that I even saw for myself.

I send both my of my dogs for daycare 5 days a week. I also sent my younger one to overnight training for 14 nights. I have zero complaints about k9U. They are extremely accommodating and personable. They send me respond card frequently (here are some attached!). They are able to accommodate my dog who likes being alone as well as my dog who is social. They get in the car and nap the whole way home, one of my dogs even lost 14 pounds since starting daycare! Her health has improved immensely. Thank you all at K9U!

I had a fine experience with this company for the past two years. However, I was recently horrified when I picked up my dog from being boarded for two nights and he was severely traumatized from his stay. He wouldn't eat for four days and his hind paws had bloody cuts on them. I use to get photos and videos daily during his past stays, but this time I received not a single one.

I know my dog and I have boarded him many times with both K9 and other places, and he has never demonstrated such broken behavior after being boarded. I feel that he was utterly neglected and probably never left in his crate the entire time. And then I just heard that a dog recently died in their care. I am horrified and disgusted! Spend your $65/night elsewhere. I will never be bring my sweet little boy back to this hellhole!

My experience was less than par. If you have a challenging puppy, they will not help. Their basic obedience class caters to dogs who require little, to no training. Grace was cold. I needed help with my puppy (he came from a junk yard) She lacked the ability to help, probably because she was use to dogs who were easily trainable. If you have a low maintenance dog, go here. If you are challenged, or are a first time dog owner, go somewhere where they actually care about the well being of all dogs, not just the easy ones.

Our dog Doty has been going to K9U for over 10 years, before we even adopted her from PAWS! It was wonderful to have a known space to send her as she adjusted to life with us, and her joy of K9 University hasn't dissipated in a decade, which is all you need to know about it. The people, the space, the transportation - we've been happy with all aspects!

And while it's hard to look back at prices from a decade ago without missing those days, the upgraded amenities are excellent and the cost is comparable to any other well-reviewed similar daycare/boarding facility. It's such a great place!

I foster for a dog rescue and K9U was our partner for daycare, boarding, and training. While I initially had a good experience here and met 2 amazing trainers through K9U, DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS HERE. Both trainers that worked for K9U quit and after hearing about the lack of organization, I was not shocked to hear about the horrific death of a dog in their "care".

The dog was left in a transport van on a hot summer day and died. Think about that. Fact is if you have a dog friendly dog he/she will be in a giant group of dogs with varying sizes and temperaments. If a dog gets bit it's shrugged off as shit happens If they do not like other dogs, they'll be in a kennel 98% of the day despite saying they will have "one on one" time. Find a more reputable place for your dogs if they need boarding. Do your research!

I tried a few day cares and my dog had terrible experiences at them but once I found K9 I knew they would be a great fit! My dog drags me into daycare now when I drop him off and he never looks back. The staff are so friendly and make sure they get to know each dog. They have a ton of dogs but they quickly learned who my dog was and always yell his name in excitement when we walk in. Also, big big plus that they have a huge temperature regulated indoor space and a huge outdoor play area. Highly recommend them!

My dog loves being boarded there. When he sees the van in our neighborhood he really trys chasing it down. Due to our traveling schedule he gets boarded every month and makes us happy how he never seems sad. Staff has always been very nice and engaged. The videos they send daily of him always show him having a good time! Really recommend them.

I want to thank K9 University and in particular Joshua, Laura and Ruby for taking care of my dog as part of their family. I had to leave her in her care for several weeks and every day I received video, photos, we were always in contact. Truly, these incredible people love dogs and do everything to make them feel good. They are definitely recommend it to ! Thanks from Cora

My dog seems to like it and like the staff there. So if he likes it I like. It's a nice place. There was an incident that happened not too bad but Kathy called me and was concerned about the incident that happened and cleared everything up for me. I appreciate Kathy for even calling back to let me know everything is ok and everything will be OK moving forward. I'm happy about that!

This is the first time I've left my pup in daycare and boarding and he loves it! I always look forward to his report card along with a picture and videos playing with his new friends. The staff are very friendly and know exactly how to handle your furry ones. Best part is that after just one day of my pup being there, they already knew him by name. AMAZING place!

This is hands down the worst dog facility I have seen in Chicago. As bad as the organization and customer service is that's not even the beginning of their issues. This place is disgusting. Dogs getting kennel cough, giardia, ect left and right. Dogs sitting in kennels, neglected. Not to mention the fact that staff left a dog in a hot car and it died. One of the worst facilities in Chicago and I would recommend you avoid it like the plague.

I took my mature, trained Rottweiler to K9 University to further refine his training. Naturally, he is very protective. However, he needed to learn to be less aggressive in certain situations and when commanded. He received excellent training and care while boarded at K9. I received daily reports, videos and pictures detailing his progress. Every time I visited Vinny, Pablo and Jasmin would spend as much time as needed with me, to ensure I could continue the training when my Rottie came home.

My pets' trainers, Pablo and Jasmin Maldonado were beyond exceptional! I could not be more pleased with the results. In addition, the entire staff displayed a true concern for all the pets in their care. I highly recommend K9 University for your pets needs.

A dog died in their care, recently. My dog was horribly mistreated, they charged an amount for training without my consent, and he got horribly ill under their care with no explanation. I have no idea how this place isn't shut down, and how any one still brings their dogs here, will forever be a mystery to me.

I just wanted to say THANK YOU. You are ALL amazing and always go above and beyond for Waffles and I. Your two ladies (Sandra) that have come picked him up are the sweetest and everyone at the desk is amazing. Ryan still responds to my questions and tik toks I send him and I boarded waffles with him in October of last year- thats amazing. The report cards you send me make me so happy and I LOVE the pictures. Waffles gets the zoomies when I tell him "want to go to day care" and gets so excited when I drop him off.

And I have to admit it breaks my heart that he is so happy to leave me when he is there and I might get a little jealous (dont judge) but thats how I know he is in the right place. So THANK YOU for taking care of my baby So if anyone is ever wondering if they should take their babies here- please look at Waffles pictures of how much he loves it here because I can say its amazing but you can only take Waffles word for it. The only bad thing is - they dont have a tik tok account and I think they should because can you all imagine the amazing content we would get from them?

Prentice is the man!. the 4 training sessions we did with Capone changed for the better, I mean I couldn't walk him without him knocking me down trying to chase after anything that moved in front of him, he escaped our yard twice and would get so worked up when someone will walk by with their dog, he would leash pull. a lot! basically our walks wasn't our favorite thing to do, when we met Prentice for an evaluation he was professional and basically told us we've spoiled Capone and that's why he acts the way he does, me and my husband didn't even realize we were creating this monster, needless to say Prentice came to the rescue. Capone is such a completely different dog now, we can now enjoy being in the back yard without him barking/running towards others walking with their dog he sits right next to us, he's more calmer and the walks? Are a breeze!

He pays attention to us now and not was around him. We are happy with our sessions definitely will recommend to others. We did the one on one training and I felt it helped a lot with training at home and bond with Capone. We are happy we made the right choice in bringing him to K9. As for Prentice he will be the next Cesar Millan, you heard it here first!

THANK YOU, CHEYENNE! I have been struggling with training issues with my dog for awhile. He is an extremely reactive dog, sensitive to loud noises, sudden movements, and especially reactive with other dogs, people, and children. He was recently attacked by a stranger dog which made his reactivity & aggression even worse. I looked into training with K9 University and found Cheyenne Twoaxe to be super understanding and willing to assist with my dog.

I had her train with my dog for a 3 week board & train, and I cannot believe the work she did with my dog! He is truly a changed dog! She worked on numerous commands, as well as strengthening his recall - all while lessening his reactivity triggers. She also made sure she understood my dog's sensitivity and personality & knew when to take things slower to properly fit his needs.

I received daily updates from her and the other staff members so I always knew my pup was in great care! He is now able to walk near people with little to no reaction (huge step), and play with some other dogs! Something I never thought would be possible for him. If you are struggling with finding a trainer who understands both you and your dog, Cheyenne is the one for you!

My husband and I became interested in doing a board and train program for our 11 mo old golden retriever, after we saw how much it helped my brothers dog. We really were at our wits end between our two small kids and the huge challenge of training a dog. We had done puppy training classes with him bf bringing him to k9 university, but w little results.

We looked into several places and really wanted to find the right fit. I am so incredibly happy, that after I spoke w PRENTICE KIDD, I just felt he was trainer we wanted. He was committed, enthusiastic, and absolutely assured he could help, .and he absolutely did! After doing 2 week board and train w him, our puppy, and are home are completely changed, and enjoyable.

I can not tell you how thankful I am to him, we finally have the family dog we wanted, and a much better bond w our puppy. We were absolutely in over our heads, and I am not exaggerating, Prentice saved our family. (Or at least my mental stability). Absolutely worth every penny! If you are in a similar situation and questioning, please do yourself the favor and look no further. Thank you Prentice and k9 university

K9 University saved us when we were going through some really difficult behavioral issues with our boxer puppy - he's a new dog after training and regular daycare! : We were referred to K9 by another Chicago dog daycare facility that didn't have the behavioral expertise to give him the training he needed. K9 is equipped to deal with bigger bully breed type dogs given they have behaviorists on staff, etc. We are extremely thankful that we were referred to K9 and so appreciative of the work they have done with our puppy. He loves it there!

I needed private lessons because of my work schedule and they where very flexible. I have a Belgium malinois and they sent me Prentice who has a very good understanding of the breed. From just one session i got the skills necessary to work on obedience with my pup. He was professional and fun to work with. Thanks again for the help and i will set up more classes when ready to get more advanced training!

Took my dog this morning to be groomed. It took much to damm long just to shave and bath with nail trimming. Took her in at 8 this morning and my husband just picked her up, and it is now 12:00 (this is ridiculous) it is just one dog GSD. I had to keep calling them to see what was happening with her, the lady then told me that the groomer had to get one of the guys to help her to restrain my dog, in order to trim her nails. ok. then when my husband came to pick her up, the first thing came out of his mouth was what did they do, she looks like they did nothing, goes on to tell me that they charged $75.00 for what, not good at all.

And says she is shedding even more now than when he brought her there. Will not be back not even for doggie daycare. Husband goes on to say, they are nothing more than young kids trying to wash a dog. Not professional at all. Well not be taking her there anymore. I know that if you have a dog, do not take it there to be groom, just kids washing the dog, therefore they do not know what or how to groom a dog Sorry but this is my fact and my opinion. Good Luck

We came here with our two puppies for puppy socialization. As we were leaving through the lobby at the end of the session, a dog from the kennel area managed to make it into the front lobby unleashed. As I was walking out the door, with one of our puppies outside of the door and one of our puppies inside, a worker shut the door on my leash so that the dog that had gotten loose could be caught.

Our boy puppy was stuck outside, and we could hear the train coming. He is scared of loud noises like the train and I was afraid he would break free from his leash and run away. Luckily, I was able to get to him before the train arrived but it was nerve racking. I'll never bring my dogs back here again.

Don't go here. I did puppy play and considered doing day care however I discovered they recently killed a dog and tried to cover it up rather than immediately taking the dog to the emergency room. Run run run far away from here

I had been in touch with a trainer via text do board and training. We set up a date and I registered online. I tried texting the week before as I had never done a board and train and needed some guidance on how things would go and if anyone would be reaching out. I did not hear back. I called the facility and they advised the trainer was on vacation until the next week.

Next week was when I was supposed to bring my dog in. Concerned, I asked if she would be back by the time I had to drop off my dog. They said they didn't know but would confirm with the trainer and call me back. I never heard back from the trainer or the facility til this day and it has been weeks since. I understand it is the pandemic and I am actually a very understanding person but there is just no excuse for lack of communication, especially when we are entrusting a stranger with our beloved pups!

So we have a newborn that we bought home and one of our dogs was not adjusting well so we decided to consider doing board and train. K9 came up on google and I reached out but took them awhile to reach back. we schedule an appointment with a staff member, Ryan and I told him my husband was a few minutes late due to bad traffic to get to their facility. Ryan messaged me back saying he wasn't going to make it.

I found this rude because husband drove all the way down there from evanston and this individual couldn't even give us notice. Lost our business and they were our first choice out of 2 companies. If you are ok being no showed then go with these guys.

I am really glad that this place was able to open and service people in need of puppy training and socialization during COVID. That's exactly the reason why we chose this place. It had good reviews, tons of good references, and an affordable price for puppy classes in the midst of pandemic. This is kind of a long review so thanks for reading if you are to the end. Hopefully it will help you make a decisions of where to take your precious pup for any training or care/boarding.

We brought our Cockapoos pup there for puppy training and socialization. It was great the first session and we throughly enjoyed the experience. They had outdoor space that offered area where the dogs run around, go potty, as well as kiddy pool. My pup discovered the water for the first time and it was awesome! He and other pups were enjoying the experience with other pups company and the kiddy pool in hot summer day.

But my pup got terrible diarrhea that night and it lasted for 2 days. We thought it was all those treats we gave him during training. He was acting normally otherwise. His stool got better in a couple of days so we didn't go to the vet. When we went to the training the second time a week later, there was a kiddy pool with a week old dirty water still in it that my pup went in.

A muddy water left over from last weeks puppy socialization! (Ewww) They rinsed the pool and filled it with clean water so my pup continued to play in the pool. We bathed the pup cause he was filthy from it. From that night for 2 days straight my pup had terrible diarrhea again. At this point we took him to the vet for fecal exam and without surprise he was diagnosed with parasite (Giardia to be specific). Giardia is only spread from consuming the infected water or fecal matter of the infected animal.

Our pup would not eat poop, but certainly it is possible that he laid in or licked grass of the potty area of the infected animals. Who knows? He must have gotten it from the water (that was the assumption of the vet). Our decision was to stop taking our pup to the facility for future training, as to take caution so this does not happening again by being in a contaminated environment.

We notified K9 university of what happened, but not in the way so not to offend them any way. Maybe we should have been more direct and asked for acknowledgment and awareness. They told us no refund of the remainder of classes as it was a series of group classes (oh well). They didn't even address the fact that my pup got sick after being in the facility for training (and we have not been anywhere else with the pup).

They simply said that he could come back when he is better for further training. We didn't like the fact that other pups might have gotten sick that day from same reason but they simply didn't even ask for the pup to be cleared of the parasite before coming back. The backyard was certainly the place for pups and other dogs to eliminate, but Giardia is something that needs to be addressed.

Water is a huge contribution to the spread and they should look into that. Now I am receiving emails from them of possible spreads of other canine diseases at the facilities that they are shutting down. I hope this place is able to address any ongoing or newly introduced sanitary issues and health problems for the future.

Do NOT send your dog here. On the 3rd day of having our dog in their care he was bit by another dog and we were never notified. We have thus far spent over $1000 in vet visits for stitches, a drain, antibiotics. To make matters worse they refused to issue a refund or cover our vet expenses. Their liability forms include a negligence waiver so effectively they think they can get away with being negligent. Atrocious business on their part. They should know a business like that is nothing without their reputation so spread the word and keep your pups safe!

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PLACE FOR TRAINING! I sent my dog to the 10 day boot camp. In the 10 days he was there, I received just a handful of "report cards" on how he was progressing. Whenever I picked him up 9/10 his primary trainer was gone for the day so I never got a true update on how he was doing. It was just he was good! He did good today.

My dog has high anxiety when it comes to other dogs and people so hearing all he's good, he did good was reassuring. I was told to hold off on walking him at home until they had a breakthrough at the center. On his last day I went to pick him up, I was instructed to come around 4:15, so that we could have 45 minutes to go over things and when I went to pick him up I found out his trainer was doing an evaluation, so she didn't come out until 4:45.

In the half hour I was sitting there, 3-4 dogs were picked up by their owners and my dog went ballistic. (Which was the WHOLE REASON I sent him to training, to stop that behavior). I informed his trainer or his actions and she attempted to correct it then but by that time there was no other dogs being picked up and walking by dogs in a kennel didn't phase him.

When I got home we tried going for a walk and it was a DISASTER. My dog had not learned ANYTHING while there. All people and dogs were still an issue in his eyes. I informed the trainer and she came out for a session at my house and then offered to come out again the following week. I reached out the day of and she told me she was Ill so I was okay pushing off the second visit.

However I tried doing as she said and take him to the park and let him observe and take in his surroundings. WHAT A MISTAKE! Spent over $1,000 for boot camp, not even factoring the gas and tolls to get there and my dog has and we have nothing to show for it. I thought this was going to be a reasonable place and my dog would have improved but once they got their money they didn't care that their "training" didn't work!

I've had a great experience at K9 University so far. My dog goes once a week for daycare and is always passed out for hours when she gets home. You can request a report card and get a video or photo from their day. Little unorganized but overall my experience has been really positive.

We have taken all 3 of our dogs to K9 for obedience training over the years, and just completed basic obedience with the newest member of our family this month. Judy @tailsrwaggin_ was great with training both humans and dogs. She made sure the class size was small enough that everyone could get some one on one attention and gave a lot of great advice and instruction.

The dogs have the opportunity to socialize a bit after class, if desired. Positive reinforcement training really goes a long way to giving your pup confidence. It helps you learn to communicate with your pooch in a way they understand and is a great bonding experience with your dog.

We did the 10 day day camp with one-on-one training in April for our 1 year old rescue who is aggressive and scared of strangers, particularly men. I believe whole heartily that Judy tried her very best and did all she could. However, we experienced no improvement after the training. We work with our pup consistently and this must just take time and love.

Maybe the training works better for a rescue with less emotional issues, it just did not work for us. Did not meet our expectations and was not worth the money. I wish you the best of luck if you give it a try and hope you have a better experience. Everyone there is super kind and does try their best!

I have a couple things to say about this place. First, they are extremely disorganized. We scheduled pickup/daycare for my two dogs for Tuesday's and Thursday's. The first pickup day went smooth. Then the next week comes around, we wake up and get them ready for pickup and no one shows up. We called in and were told by Laura Z that our dogs were not even scheduled at all.

Even though we scheduled 4 weeks in advance. We reschedule for them to be picked up the next day and even paid ahead this time. Laura tried to tell us that they only do pickups at 6am when they have been picked up at 8am in the past. She has no idea what she's talking about. This is the worst part. They get picked up Wednesday morning and dropped off Wednesday afternoon.

My dog Dakota had blood on her cheek! When I looked close she had a huge gash in her cheek. We attempted to call and email and received no response. Finally they answered the phone and told us no one saw anything. They then said our dog played rough and that's why she was bit in the face. My boyfriend then drove to the location and they admitted to seeing a "dot" on her face.

They neglected to call us or even check up on her. They thankfully covered the vet cost but now my dog has to take 3 different kinds of medicine and wear a cone. This was handled completely unprofessionally, they dodged our communications and their story was inconsistent. Laura Z has no idea what she's doing and should be fired. She messed up our reservation, gave us incorrect information, and lied about what happened to our dog.

Even if our dog played rough we should have been notified, and she should have been separated into a smaller group or removed. We pay to have responsible people watch our dogs and care for them. Not this garbage. Thankfully the owner Ruby actually helped us and was kind but other than that, this place is terrible. I can't speak for every employee but this place needs to seriously fix their issues.
