KittyKind would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt "thank you" to the Petco Love for our 2021 Grant Award. This will help us continue our shared missiion of creating a better world for animals and the people who love them. This grant will go towards the care of rescued cats, just paw steps away from their home.

Recently, the Petco Love Corporation awarded KittyKind a $7,000 grant. Tully and Buster celebrated the award at the KittyKind adoption center. Graduates of foster care themselves, they encourage all who can to foster other fur babies.
Services
KittyKind is dedicated to matching our cats with their perfect homes and educating the public on feline welfare in New York City. We have an unwavering commitment to caring for and finding the best adoptive homes for our cats, with a special dedication to those who are deemed "special needs" because of illness, injury, disability, or age.
KittyKind is a not-for-profit, all-volunteer group. Although we are a registered charity, we receive no public funding. The cats must depend on the kindness and generosity of people like you, who support our efforts to save their precious lives. While there is always a shortage of money, there is never a shortage of lives to be saved.
The KittyKind Foster Program is an integral part of our lifesaving work. It also provides wonderful opportunities for New York cat lovers to enjoy the variety and flexibility of fostering. If you're not ready to adopt but you want to help save a cat's life, fostering is a fun and rewarding experience.

Always a quick visit here. They always have exactly what I need. Took one star off due to lack of floor staff. One of the other customers was looking for a very specific dog toy and there was no one around to assist him. Perhaps if they paid their employees a living wage they wouldn't have issues keeping their staff.

Big store with friendly staff. If the petco near me doesn't have what I need. This is the next location I go to. They also have a section for cooked foods for dogs which is amazing. This store also has multiple levels.

Cleanest and most well-stocked pet store in Manhattan - I go for aquarium supplies and the staff is always knowledgeable and helpful when we ask specific questions about different species and help to educate us on our new pets needs and care before we go home. Try and ask for Adonis, Zoe, Nancy, and Wayne when going to the aquatics section - I've found them to be more knowledgeable and personable than the boutique fish stores.

What i really love about this store is that they also have salt water fish, rare fish, crustatians, and crystal shrimp in a TON of color and species varieties (a personal favorite)!

I'm really sorry that I have to leave this review. I'm not the kind of reviewer that goes on Google or Yelp and trashes businesses for no reason (you can read my other reviews if you don't believe me), but this has to be put up as a word of warning. My aquarium lost some fish over time (nothing unusual, but we hadn't replaced them) and we were down to just a few and I wanted to repopulate the tank.

I tested the water before heading to the fish store and the Ph was about 7.6 (maybe slightly high but the water out of the tap here is pretty alkaline), but it's the same as it's been in the tank for years. I had never been to Petco before and the reviews where pretty solid, so since they're fairly close to me I decided to give them a try. Bought two baby fuzzy nosed plecos, some cherry barbs, a bunch of neon tetras and a few others that added up to probably $40 to $50 in fish.

I had to leave town for a couple of weeks and my girlfriend was in charge of feeding (which she's good at) and general tank monitoring. A few days into my trip, she started reporting to me that some of the new fish had died. I thought that was unusual but I figured perhaps the shock of changing tanks (?. although we'd never had that happen), and as the days passed, more and more fish were dying.

We finally figured out that we had brought Ich disease in with these new fish (white spots appearing on the fish) and it was killing all of them. It killed both our baby plecos, all the tetras and cherry barbs, and we are now left with two fish (the name of which I can't remember, but they have stripes). We got medicine for the tank but not in time to save most of the fish.

I didn't realize that we needed to save the dead ones to prove what was going on to the pet store and we flushed them, so I'm out the money at this stage. However, just a word to the wise, I would not recommend this store for buying fish. We have never had a problem in four-plus years of owning a tank and we certainly didn't have Ich disease in our tank before bringing these fish in.

The existing fish had been in the tank for quite a while, years, in fact. The folks in the aquarium department there were super nice and helpful, but obviously bringing a bunch of fish home with a deadly disease ruined the experience. Buyer beware.

Although I live in Queens I don't mind doing the trip to this location. I've been coming here for for quite sometime to get wet food for my dog. I've gone to the Petco in Queens and the store staff are not as attentive or welcoming as this Petco store. Petco offers E-receipts if you create a profile which is great.

The people that work here-for ther most part are helpful and keep the place reasonably clean by comparison. But the guys that load in their pallets around closing time, they have their profession confused with a that of security force who have taken a vow of frowns.

I stopped in today looking for a coat for my dog and found myself being helped by the amazing Leslie. She helped us so much by finding the perfect coat to fit my Lou boy, even offering to look in the back if they didn't have a size we wanted. Next thing I knew, Leslie and I were both on the floor doing a full coat fitting for my dog - her recommending appropriate sizes and then helping to see if they fit. Leslie was so knowledgeable, helpful, patient, proactive and kind - moving on after me to help an elderly lady find appropriate treats for her pets dietary restrictions.

Throughout my 30 mins wandering around petco, I saw Leslie go above and beyond helping so many different people with all different sorts of pet needs - and not because people were asking her, but because she repeatedly was asking how she can help everyone who walked passed her. Seriously, I think I stayed in the store an extra few mins just in total admiration of her repeated kindness and willingness to help every stranger who walked passed her.

In today's weird pandemic times, I walked out of the store and for the first time in a really long time at a retail environment, I thought to myself 'this is exactly what makes the in-store shopping experience far more superior than purchasing online'. Thank you for a wonderful in-store experience, Leslie! Hey petco - maybe you already know this but Leslie is truly is a gem - she is #1, please give this wonderful woman a promotion (and raise).

I'm usually in and out of PetCo to see their selection of cat items since I'm in the process of adopting/fostering since I just lost my precious fur baby last month to an onset of kidney issues and rapid weight loss. I decided to stop by the cat cage area which just so happens to be managed by KittyKind, and while the initial woman that let me see the cats was nice, I get bad vibes from this place overall.

The other two women that I interacted with made me feel as if I'm too inept to adopt a cat - as if I haven't had a cat before, which I have, and in which has been clearly communicated to them both. I'm well over the age to adopt, have a job, and guess what - I also volunteer at a competing animal shelter in the city in addition to my regular job!

Despite the bad vibes, I decided to put an app in for two kitties, and during the interview at KittyKind, the woman that I spoke to made me feel dumb the entire time. She even tried telling me what my household is like - baffling, to say the least. Try doing a home visit first, and then tell me what my residence is like, thanks. She also tried telling me that I can't afford a cat when my family and I agreed to split costs from the get go, in which that was also communicated on the application and during the interview. I'm at the point where I don't even care if I get the kitties from this place.

With the amount of shelters in the city, including mine, I'm sure I'll find a loving cat or set of kitties that will be the perfect match with me and not deal with people that can't be transparent to save their lives, make me feel inept and stupid, and tell me about myself when they don't even know me. I don't mind supporting PetCo, but it'll be from afar moving forward - or I'll just stick to the one on the other side of my neighborhood in Brooklyn - I only go to the one on 17th and Broadway since I'm almost always in the city, so it's convenient for me. If you're looking to adopt from here - good luck, and adopter beware.

I adopted a kitten from here who was given a clean bill of health. Later on, I found out that the kitten had a respiratory infection and an intestinal parasite (both of which he passed on to my cat at home). Thousands of dollars in vet bills later, we have not been able to get rid of the parasite and need to undergo a third round of medication. If you decide to adopt a cat from here, double check that their bill of health is accurate and up to date. I do not understand how my kitten could have ended up in this condition had he been properly cared for at the shelter.

I'm not an avid animal lover, but I went to purchase fish and water snails for my fish tank. Firstly, the way everything is presented, in glass tanks with beautiful neon lighting, is absolutely magnificent. Secondly, everyone was so helpful. I guess they noticed I was sort of lost, and immediately a petco worker was at my side, getting anything I needed. Great shop!

Went through an entire interview process, met with a volunteer on zoom, set up a date to meet the cat. Said we were likely to be approved. Not 24 hrs later we were rejected. When we attempt to follow up, absolutely no response. If you don't want to adopt your animals then don't run an adoption facility!

I'd had a cat for 18 years. When I was ready for a new one, I paid several visits to Kitty Kind at Petco Union Sq. I found it to be an exasperating and ultimately sad experience. I understand that they want safe and responsible homes for the rescued cats, but the rules and hoops to jump through were absurd. I submitted to a home visit. Passed that with flying colors.

I was told I would need to install window stops to restrict all my window openings. I understand the concern, but as a responsible pet owner, I know not to open a window wide unless the pet is locked in another room. They have another rule that kittens cannot be adopted as singles--you need to adopt another cat along with it. I didn't want two cats, at least.

I expressed strong interest in a cat. I kept in touch for the following week. She was given to another home, which I discovered only on my next Petco visit. I then went to a city shelter, with a fifteen-minute adoption intake, and I took my kitten home the following day. The city experience seemed more efficient for homing more cats, and also kinder to people.

I recently adopted a cat from KittyKind. It was a foster at first, and it was not successful. But when a family member was interested, we talked to KK and they made it work in another household to get the cat a home. They are stringent in their decision making, and are very discerning in their screening/application process which some may disagree with, but they are doing it in the name of the cats. No, they don't have the money or space to give their cats the big runs or rooms for privacy, but they are vigilant about keeping them safe, well fed and in finding good, safe, stable homes for them. I love my KK rep Patricia and always felt she just wanted the best for the cats. They really care. And now he's living his best cat life.

I had the best experience here recently. I started out by fostering a cat for a few weeks. The volunteers and staff have been incredibly supportive each step of the way and I have now adopted the foster kitty. They went out of their way to make sure everything was working out and were extremely helpful with all of my questions. I've adopted cats in the past and this is by far one of the most compassionate and well-run cat adoption organizations. I highly recommend them.

We were really disappointed with our experience at KittyKind at Petco Union Sq we are so sad to say. The girls who were cleaning out the cages (who I think work for Petco) were just lovely, helpful, took the time to answer any questions, gave advise and really cared about the gorgeous bundles of fur. The volunteer who was there on Sunday (4/28, lady with short dark hair) was disinterested, unhelpful and didn't seem to know the answers to any questions.

She kept pushing us to fill in an application as she wanted to close up so we did. Then when it came to interview time she said "she was tired and didn't want to be bothered" so she asked another lady to do it who didn't volunteer for KittyKind (we asked). We got asked basic questions which we answered (window screens, what would you feed etc which are important) but we felt it was a half hearted interview and they seemed more interested wondering why the cats we had growing up were outside cats rather than inside (we both lived in the country growing up and everyone's cats were outside).

Yes my cat, when I was a child, died by being hit by a car on a street miles from our home which we seemed to be getting punished for now! For the record our other cat died of old age peacefully at home surrounded by a loving family! I explained the cats we adopt would be inside cats but alas we got declined and they refused to explain why. At least have the niceness to explain.

So unprofessional as were their emails. I understand you have to vet people, as you thoroughly should, but at least have people vetting who know what they are doing and can do it well. We are two loving people, professional, grown up with cats and dogs, good space apartment who love animals and are excited to have two additions to our family. You have so many bad reviews on here KittyKind - all saying the same thing. Maybe it's time to vet your volunteers as you do your adopters as I can imagine half of them wouldn't make the cut.

They are doing good things but they make up unnecessary and anxious rules throughout the adoption process. For example, I was asked to send a video of my apartment. Then they decided they wanted a video of the screens in my windows. Then they wanted a video of me punching the screens to prove the screens were in place. WTF?

I hate being a downer on adoption agency's because how can you put down a place that saves animals as their main goal? It's seems like a sin to say anything negative about them, but I feel like we were judged way too hard with this agency to point of being profiled. So what if we don't live in an apartment in the city? And so what if we don't earn $100,000+ year?

We would still love, cherish and fully provide for any animal we bring into our home. Again, while I think it's WONDERFUL they are saving our feline friends, the fact that they are so harsh in their judgments means some of these cats miss out on going to really good, loving families. (PS just because a person has a fancy job, is white, and lives an expensive area, does NOT mean they will make time for or properly care for their kitty. Js)

Just adopted a beautiful cat from Kittykind. We were thinking of adopting cats from a different organization but they took a long time to respond to our application and behaved as if they were doing us a huge favor. Kittykind on the other hand was very quick to respond and professional about the entire process. Even when there were some issues with the cat, Kittykind was responsive and helpful. Miriam in particular has been wonderful. It's been 5 weeks she still emails just to check in and make sure everything is going well. I would highly recommend them and would consider adopting from them again.

I adopted my cat from Meow Parlor and the KittyKind reps were very nice to work with. I do think some of the volunteers at Petco in Union Square were slightly rude but not mean or bad to the cats. But overall, no complaints in my adoption process. I appreciate that they are very selective. I did end up working with KittyKind again when they helped me pull my second cat from the ACC's kill list. Again, the rep was super helpful.

Rude and unhelpful volunteers make getting a cat impossible. Go elsewhere to adopt a cat - this place will likely be a waste of your time. Kitty kind volunteers at Petco reject qualified adoption applicants without giving ANY reason why. Their standards for what constitutes a good cat owner are ludicrous and actually keep cats from being adopted. I am not a frequent online reviewer, but I want to make sure that others do not get their hopes up only to be let down.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the volunteers at KittyKind are rude, judgemental and condescending. I went into Petco on a Friday night to inquire about the adoption process. There were 3 volunteers working. 1 of the volunteers was speaking to a little girl, while the other 2 sat and chatted on the side while playing on their phones. It took me about 10 minutes of hovering to finally get the attention of 1 of the volunteers that was on her phone.

She was helpful and demonstrated a good knowledge of the rescue cats. She explained that she was a trainee and would occasionally stop to confirm questions with the 3rd volunteer. This 3rd and more experienced volunteer remained on her phone and would only look up to ask "What was the question?", but only when her name was repeatedly called and then would go straight back to her phone.

During the "interview" portion of the application, I was interviewed by the trainee volunteer and more experienced volunteer that I spoke to. For about 50% of the interview, I was lectured on how I have been raising my 2 cats wrong for 13 years. I know that I'm not the perfect cat owner, but I do the best that I can and I love them with all my heart. It was a very upsetting and disappointing experience for me.

I adopted my guys from here last year, and could not be happier with them. The staff at KittyKind is thorough, and they make sure that you are ready to care for a cat, have realistic expectations of the expense involved, and have thought through what cat-proofing your home really means (this includes a home visit to inspect windows to make sure your new friend doesn't swan dive into courtyard of the Gracie Mews). Kathy followed up after we took Marx and Lenin home (the names their original owner gave them, and they just stuck :) to make sure we were all doing well, and was available to answer questions any time that I had them.

About six months after we adopted, another volunteer reached out to help raise funds for a cat they had rescued who needed medical assistance, and we gladly helped out. I really love that the staff and volunteers truly care about the animals, and made sure that we as prepared as we could be to take Marx and Lenny home.

Rude volunteer staff - They are disorganized and EXTREMELY JUDGMENTAL. Beautiful cats who I would have loved to adopt, but could not deal with the volunteers who run this organization. Please, go elsewhere and save yourself the time and stress of dealing with this organization.

Adding a new member to the family should be a pleasant experience, but with this organization it was intolerable. The volunteers were not at all helpful and had a bit of an attitude when we asked to look at the cats at the petco in Union square. They made it seem like they didn't want to find homes for the cats, but were just there to stand around and obnoxiously flirt with each other and tease the cats.

When my mom started to browse the binder of cats that was sitting out on the table (since again, the volunteers were to busy to chatting with one another for her to see the cats there) another volunteer woman literally snatched the book out of her hands. I didn't bother checking out the application process as it was clear they didn't want to adopt out any of the cats. I ended up adopting through Liberty Humane Society who are great and want to help find homes for the cats who all deserve a loving place to call home.
