Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center (SAVS) was founded in 1994 by Dr. Mary K. Klein and Dr. Reuben Merideth. At the time, Tucson did not have a multi-specialty veterinary group for patients with multiple or complicated needs. As a result, pet owners were required to travel between several veterinary clinics to care for their animals.
Providing your information now may help us expedite the treatment of your pet. Thank you and we look forward to serving you! Suspect poisoning or toxicities (rat bait, anti-freeze, medication, etc.) ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center. Our veterinary emergency center treats the most critically ill or seriously injured patients first.
When your pet needs advanced diagnostics or procedures, your family veterinarian may refer you to a veterinary specialist. A veterinary specialist is a doctor with 3-5 years additional education in a specific area of medicine. Our veterinary specialists at SAVS are board-certified and maintain the highest quality of care for their patients.
Most pet patients seen in veterinary practice today actually need an annual thorough dental exam and cleaning from a veterinary dentistry specialist, which includes supragingival and subgingival cleaning, intraoral evaluation, polishing, and further periodontal therapy. A comprehensive pet dental cleaning at Arizona Veterinary Dental Specialists involves the removal of plaque and calculus either with hand instruments or sonic/ultrasonic instruments above and below the gingival margin, periodontal probing, intra-oral radiographs, charting, and more involved treatment such as deep periodontal therapy or extractions if indicated.

My husband and I recently had to make the hard decision to put our dog Lola of 14 years down. We preferred to use an at-home euthanasia service but we had to make our decision on a weekend and everybody was booked. Therefore, we decided to take her to Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center. I was so pleased that they could take us back right away.

They had a comfortable, family-friendly room where euthanasia takes place. My sweet girl was placed on a comfortable large ottoman that they had in the room. They wheeled her out to start the IV, otherwise she was with us the whole time. The vet (I believe it was Dr. Dawson) and staff were so sweet and sympathetic. Lola was my baby girl for 14 precious years, so this was an incredibly hard day for me and my family.

But this place made the process easier. I appreciate the sympathy and comfort they provided us. Even on the day I went to pick up her ashes. They were so kind. Thank you for all you do Southern Arizona Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Center!

Very helpful and caring. There was an employee (I think her name was Precious?) who was very compassionate and helpful, asking if we needed anything while we waited and assisting those animal owners who's pets had passed away. I did have to pay a $125 "exam fee" when I first arrived, but because my animal was fine and didn't require anything past initial triage, the fee was refunded and my visit cost nothing. Overall would recommend

I think these people are really kind, very understanding and patient, the only thing is they are a bit expensive, I wish they weren't because they are great. They helped us with are fur baby was really sick and had to be put to sleep. They let us stay with her and gave us a small mold of her foot prints. I would give them 5 stars if they weren't so expensive. Thank you for all of your kindness and understanding. You are awesome.

Unfortunately because I didn't have the money to pay up front for the office visit my dog didn't get seen! The lady there told me to surrender my dog to get her help! Never going to do that my dogs are like my kids I'm not going to get rid of them! I feel they could've done something for me but chose not to after all the business I've done there, I'm just saddens me they wouldn't help me out and the guy there was so worried about getting there clip board back like I was going to take it! Guess I'll be looking for a different place to take my dogs when I have an emergency maybe someone who has a heart and not greedy for money!

I have never left a review of a place in my life, but this place I absolutely needed to. This place is about forty minutes away from my house, but at the time my dog needed help, this was one of the only places that was accepting patients. My dog Wally had been acting off earlier in the day and by the afternoon he could no longer stand. His eyes were glazed over and he was completely unresponsive.

I thought he had passed away on the drive over because his breathing was so shallow. He's only five. By the time I got there I ran him in and I was sobbing. They rushed him back and everyone at the front was so kind. The vet determined it was anaphylactic shock not too long after, which considering his condition - was amazing news because it was treatable.

He even let me back there to visit him before I left him overnight. I didn't think I was going to walk out of there with Wally when I came in, and I was so overjoyed that I got to pick him up the next day. While I was waiting to pick him up I saw many people come in like I did - crying and frantic. The staff treated every case with urgency but also with kindness.

Everyone there from the front desk, to the vet techs, to the vets, were so busy but they still made time to treat the people and animals with respect and care. I've been to many vet hospitals because I've had animals my whole life, and this one was truly different. I can't thank the staff enough for what they did and also the true compassion they showed.

Nobody wants to be in the position of having to take their pet to a surgeon but if you must, then this is surely the place to go. From the ease of setting up appointments, arrival, and care of your sweet pet, Southern Arizona Vet is the top choice to make. in fact, there shouldn't be any doubt. Our Cavalier King Charles broke her little puppy leg, and she received phenomenal care while there, overnight, and in her follow-up care. I appreciate that my vet, Dr. Rojas in Nogales, knew to send us where he would take his pets.

I brought my cat Maykin in for a blood transfusion 2 days ago. the vet that I had taken her to said she was severely anemic and that's what she needed and rest. She declined rapidly that night so I took her into this hospital there they saw her immediately and took her back to check her vitals. They walked me through the process and what they were going to do for her and explained everything in the detail about the costs and the treatment so that me And my boyfriend who was on the phone with me could understand.

We left her overnight to do the transfusion and take care of her in ways that I could not not. The next morning I got the call that she was still not doing well and they were not seeing anything on the X-rays or the ultrasound that they had taken so I should come in and see her. The doctor was very reassuring and sympathetic and told me that we have done literally everything that could be done and that the next step was euthanasia she gave me time to process and walked me through how it was going to work and how it wouldn't be painful for her at all.

She fell asleep and they gave me as much time as I needed to say goodbye to her the next day I went in and picked up her clay paw print that had some of her hair and her prints a d her name inscribed on it.

This place and the people there are beyond excellent. On 10/8/21 my 10 year old Aussie was in severe respiratory distress. She needed emergency care, ASAP. I called other clinics but everywhere else was at capacity. When I called this clinic the nice lady on the phone said they were busy but would try to get her in as soon as they could. When we showed up they took her in right away as she was having obvious breathing problems and her vitals were not good.

The vet and techs took her back and did an ultrasound. She had a tumor and fluid around her heart. The vet was excellent at explaining what was happening and what procedures we could try, but was honest and straight forward and said at most she might have another 3-4 months with painful surgeries. We decided it was best to put her down and save her suffering.

This is where the clinic personnel really showed their compassion and professionalism. They showed me and my family (four of us) into a quiet, darkened room with a platform for the dog and some blankets. They brought her into the room for us and let us spend as much time as we needed to say goodbye. No rush, even though they were busy and I'm sure had many other animals to see.

We got to hold her and tell her she was the goodest girl and say goodbye. Once we were ready, the vet came into the room and explained how the euthanasia medication worked. He was quick and efficient. We all were able to hold her as she passed peacefully. Everyone, from the front desk personnel to the techs and vet were top of the line. They made a traumatizing and grief filled night easier to face. I'll be bringing my animals here for their vet needs from now on.

We brought our dog Lucy to Southern AZ Vet Specialty and Emergency Center on a Friday evening (8/6/21) because she needed an emergency surgery to remove a pyometra. The staff were very kind and explained what we could expect from the surgery. They answered all our questions thoroughly and made sure we knew the risks. The staff were understanding when we needed to leave Lucy there to go get a loan before they started the surgery.

They got her started on fluids, and after we returned and made a payment, they got her prepped, and started the surgery within a couple hours. They called us when finished and let us know she was doing well. The surgery was a success! We're so thankful! They even kept Lucy for 2 nights to make sure she was healing well before sending her home. They sent her home with meds and were helpful when we called later in the week because we were worried she was in too much pain.

Thank you so much, Southern AZ Vet Specialty! This was a very involved surgery, and we appreciate you being there to do it on a Friday evening. You saved Lucy's life and for that we are eternally grateful! :) She's still recovering but doing very well at home. We would definitely refer friends/family here for their pets' emergencies.
