We do our best to match you with a dog or cat that is best suited for your family and lifestyle. We have worked with West Suburban for many years and can say that the care and treatment of the animals in their care is fabulous. There are many organizations that rescue animals but few that put the time, money, heart and soul into their animals the way West Suburban does. I am more in love with WSHS today than when I started volunteering 14 years ago. I have found true friendships in the forms of animals, staff, and other volunteers.

Thank you for visiting us! The West Suburban Humane Society (WSHS) is a volunteer-based, animal welfare organization that was founded in 1972 as a lost-and-found referral service. Now, we operate at full capacity at all times, providing care and housing for up to 25 dogs and 60 cats in our facilities, and even more animals in our foster homes.

At that time, a small group of volunteers, working from their homes, gathered information and maintained records for the purpose of reuniting lost companion animals and their owners.
At West Suburban Humane Society, our mission is to work towards the day when all dogs and cats are loved and cared for and pet owners have access to essential resources so they may enjoy a fulfilling relationship with their pets. Provide compassionate care for cats and dogs on their journey to compatible and loving homes.
Please read this section thoroughly before submitting an application or heading to the Adoption Center. Please note that we only consider adoption applications from Illinois residents who live in the following counties: Cook, Dupage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will. No out of state applications will be accepted at this time.

We recently adopted our dog, Buddy, from West Suburban Humane Society. Buddy was in foster care with one of WSHS's volunteers. The staff and foster mom were wonderful about giving us all information about Buddy's background, setting up a time for us to meet Buddy at the foster mom's home, and answering all of our questions. They were very thorough with their background check and adoption process, which I appreciated.
They have consistently followed up with us to see how Buddy is doing and have offered lots of help and information. It was a wonderful experience and we absolutely adore Buddy. Thank you for all that you do!

I am so pleased with west suburban humane society! I have recently adopted this sweet cat, Bunny - now named Olive, and the staff were all so informative, kind, and helpful. The facility was great and I loved that we had time to meet her and fire away with any questions. I felt so supported through the entire process and am so happy to have gotten Olive from here! We have a great experience adopting TJ from WSHS. Eric being a adoption counselor is very patient with us. He knows every cat in the shelter and gave us a throughout introduction. Our trust has been built up since then. We were very nervous to meet TJ for the first time. Nanette walked us through all the steps and shared with us all she knows. We are so grateful for the whole process.
And we have the perfect one in our family now! He is energetic, curious and friendly. We can ask no more than TJ! If you are seeking adoption agency to work with, this is the place I highly recommend. Even our friend who just visited once said that this is the best shelter she could have think of.

I couldn't be happier with our experience with WSHS! They helped match us to the perfect dog for our family. They told us when a dog wasn't a good fit for our needs, & really gave us their expert advice. They took their time to make sure we left with a pup that was absolutely perfect for us. Im so happy we adopted through this shelter! Very clean, safe & knowledgeable environment! Highly recommend! Kitty & Eric were the best!

Literally wanted to give my 6 year old cat a friend because he is lonely and has lots of energy and I saw this beautiful kitten that I thought was perfect and yet was denied because he hasn't had a wellness check. I literally had him at the vet last year because he was sick (and I mean visibly sick) and the vet checked EVERYTHING from his teeth to his blood and everything was normal he just had gastritis which was treated.
And yet I was denied BEFORE EVEN MEETING THE CAT! Like what does his vet history have to do with me meeting the kitten?! She would've been happier living here than that place. Thank you for breaking my heart and ruining a chance for a kitten to have a nice loving home.

We adopted Tina from West Suburban Humane Society around a week ago and they were great! They seemed very invested in their animals and gave us lots of information to help us introduce her into our home. The only reason I put 4 stars is, they didn't mention she was underweight and we should be feeding her more than we usually would. She's a sweet and adorable kitty who is super friendly, vocal, and cuddly.
I definitely recommend them to any future adopters! [Tina is 4 1/2 months old]. (There are some reviews from a while ago that say the place smells bad, or they were harsh with applications, but it smells good and their application process is great for finding perfect, capable, owners for their animals!)
