Your Trusted Partner in Animal Rescue & Adoption
Toledo Animal Rescue was established in 1927 as Toledo's oldest no-kill animal rescue organization. As a certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit, we operate with a dedicated staff and community volunteers to provide temporary and indefinite shelter for homeless and abandoned animals. Our organization focuses on adoption services, animal welfare education, and mandatory spay/neuter programs while maintaining a strict no-kill policy. Through our PAWS program, we offer pet therapy services to community groups, demonstrating our commitment to both animal care and human well-being.

The Rescue maintains transparent adoption processes requiring pre-approved applications and reserves the right to ensure proper animal placement. With no government funding, we rely entirely on community donations and volunteer support to sustain our operations. Our facility operates daily with structured hours for donations and appointment-based adoption/surrender services, serving the Toledo metropolitan area and surrounding regions.

Pet Adoption
Our comprehensive adoption program ensures proper animal placement through application review and waiting periods. We prioritize animal welfare while helping families find compatible pets. Adoptable animals remain available indefinitely while maintaining health and temperament.
Animal Surrender
We accept pet surrenders by appointment with assessed fees supporting animal care. Our process includes application review, health assessment, and proper documentation to ensure animal safety during transition to our facility.
PAWS Therapy
Our PAWS program delivers free animal-assisted therapy to community groups, proven to reduce stress and improve social skills. We provide comforting animal interactions for schools, healthcare facilities, and corporate events.
Volunteer Programs
We offer structured volunteer opportunities for animal care and enrichment. Participants complete orientation and liability forms before assisting with daily rescue operations and animal socialization activities.
Community Education
We promote responsible pet ownership through adoption counseling and resource referrals. Our programs address behavior training, affordable housing options, and medical care resources for pet owners.
Questions
What adoption requirements should I know?
All adoptions require pre-approved applications and a 24-48 hour waiting period. We prioritize animal welfare over first-come applications.
Can I surrender my pet without an appointment?
We do not accept animal drop-offs. All surrenders require advance application submission and scheduled appointments.
How does your no-kill policy work?
Animals remain in our care indefinitely while physically/mentally healthy. We only euthanize for unmanageable medical or behavioral issues.
What volunteer opportunities exist?
We offer animal care volunteering with structured orientation. Positions include socialization, enrichment, and facility maintenance.
How do donations help your organization?
Donations fund food, shelter, medical care, and adoption programs. We receive no government funding and rely entirely on community support.
What areas do you serve?
We primarily serve Toledo and surrounding northwest Ohio communities, providing adoption services and outreach programs regionally.

Paid for a kitten for my son Christmas gift & had her for 7-10 days and noticed she was sent with me with a ringworm took her back to the shelter so she could receive treatment. At first the service seemed great but during this process no one kept me updated and seemed to become irritable when I called I paid $250 getting my house treated and disinfected. The 10th will make it a month and she still isn't home and no updates. No offer to help refund my money for the inconvenience on their behalf. NOTHING I'll never make another purchase from this shelter in my life

They had a special on a Saturday to get your pets vaccinated and tagged if you needed. was a great idea. managed to get ALL 3 of my min pins yearly vaccines for $120.00 which if I had taken them to my vet it would've been probably close to three times that. and now that they are vaccines they are getting their spa days at the The Grateful Groomers again! It was a WIN, WIN! Oh and the girls were all awesome and very efficient!

Called for help for 2 2 week old kittens. That someone just opened their car door and dropped off in Sylvania. Their answer was we dont have any fosters available for kittens that young. What kind of a rescue site turns animals away.

The staff here helped our family to select a new best friend. They truly care about animals and work hard to get them to families who are looking to adopt and not shop. We have had Percy for going on 6 years and he has been an absolute joy!

In the process of adopting and when I say they took time with my current dog and her new brother to get to know each other they were amazing! We did a meet and greet and they helped take the steps to make sure our home would be a happy one. We are so happy we went to this rescue!
