Services
Animal Adoption
Our adoption program carefully matches rescued animals with responsible owners through comprehensive screening. We maintain detailed records of each animal's medical history and behavioral traits to ensure successful placements. The process includes counseling to help adopters understand their new pet's specific needs.
Foster Care Programs
Specialized foster homes provide temporary care for animals requiring medical attention or socialization. Our program includes training for foster families and covers all medical expenses. This approach helps prepare animals for permanent adoption while reducing shelter stress.
Cruelty Investigation
Certified investigators work with law enforcement to prevent animal abuse through inspections and legal interventions. We document cases of neglect or mistreatment and provide shelter for rescued animals during legal proceedings. Educational outreach helps prevent future incidents.
Humane Education
Community programs teach responsible pet ownership and safe human-animal interactions. We offer workshops on spay/neuter importance, animal first aid, and cruelty prevention. Materials are available for schools and community groups throughout Herkimer County.
Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers contribute to all aspects of shelter operations from animal care to fundraising. We provide training for various roles including adoption counseling, facility maintenance, and event coordination. Recognition programs acknowledge volunteers' valuable contributions to our mission.

Herkimer County Humane Society was the best shelter I visited when I was looking for a cat. They were professional and friendly, and had the best cat room by far! After several visits, I picked Miss Emily Pickles. She'd had surgery on one eye to remove an ulcer, and she has some problems with her other eye, but that doesn't bother her. She's fond of chasing things I can't even see. If you're looking to adopt, I recommend HCHS. And consider an animal that's less than perfect. I did, and soon found out she IS perfect!
